Virtue Focus: Understanding Liberty

When a child develops an understanding of what liberty is, they begin to appreciate their own agency more and more. They become more discerning of situations where their agency is compromised. Understanding liberty is vital for patriotism to exist. 

Tips for training your child to develop and Understanding of Liberty:

  • When rules of the household are broken and consequences are meted out, use language that points to the child’s agency leading to freedom or confinement. Help them learn the connection.
  • Next time you are in nature, watch for natural consequences that occur there, and how they apply to our agency. Like sunburns, cold hands, or thirst.
  • Read a book together that portrays the main character developing an Understanding of Liberty, like this book:
