Ghost Town Treasure Hunt
Book 1 in the Geocache Club Series
THE BEST KIND OF TREASURE HUNT
When his best friend moves away, eleven-year-old Layton Clark wonders if he’ll ever have another adventure. Then he meets Sherry. She introduces him to the treasure-hunting world of geocaching. A contagious thirst for adventure sends them hunting for mysterious geocaches popping up in random places—like an abandoned Kansas ghost town.
Layton and Sherry must work together to unlock the clues in the strange geocaches, solve a 100 year old mystery to clear a dead man’s name, and convince Layton’s archaeologist father the town is worth studying further so his family doesn’t have to move.
With everything he holds dear at stake, Layton can’t afford to leave a single headstone unscrubbed, or geocache treasure undiscovered.

Layton Clark is not a fan of change of any kind and he is dealing with a lot of fears/anxiety regarding change and new experiences/situations. This makes things difficult, because even though Layton may have lived in his small town for all of his life, but he is struggling to make a new best friend after his friend Charlie has moved away. Shortly after the school year starts, Layton meet Sherry a new girl to his hometown. She introduces him to the world of geocaching and that is the jump start to a new mysterious adventure and a new friendship for the two of them. Through this new friendship, Layton learns a lot about facing his fears and learning how to work through new situations, becoming more open as the story goes. I love that the main character is a big reader and the book is peppered with his references to books that he has enjoyed and how real life situations compare to scenes from the books; added a few things to my “To Be Read” list for sure! The references to geocaching were explained well and in such a way that it made me want to try it for myself…sounds like real life treasure hunting! The book is the first in the series and the mystery is just getting going, so just a warning that there is no tidy ending here! I received an advance reader copy of this book from Chicken Scratch Books however, my review is voluntary and reflects my personal opinion.

I really loved this book, it was so good. I loved the setting and especially the ghost town. I also thought it was really cool to include the geocaching because I have heard of it but I haven’t done it before but now I want to. I felt that made the story really unique. It’s a great read especially if you like mystery and spookiness. I can’t wait to read the next one!

This was a fun book to read! Perfect for my 10 & 12 year old boys. The characters were relatable, the mystery kept you wanting to read more and I loved that it was set in Kansas! Such a wholesome, well written book!

The main character, Layton, works to solve a local Ghost Town mystery aided by his new friend and adventures with geocaching. As Layton realistically grapples with a lot of change (and potential change) in his life, he experiences personal growth. I especially enjoyed how his friendships evolved, and I bet every kid who reads this story will want to try geocaching for themselves!

This was a fun book. I especially liked the way it introduces geocaching to kids who love the thrill of a treasure hunt. It is also a story of finding friendship, new interests, family, and appreciating history and adventures in real life.
I like the way Layton grows from a lonely kid missing his best friend who’s moved away to someone who discovers both a new best friend and a new passion. By the end of the book Layton is ready to welcome others into his circle of friends and share his interest in geocaching with others.
My only negative is a small one. I wish there had been a better resolution to the question of who RBT is since the name had been found on multiple geocaches around the town. I wasn’t quite satisfied with the way the final chapter wrapped handled that.
All in all, Geocache Club: Ghost Town Treasure Hunt is entertaining and informational. I hope we see more from Abbi Lee in the future!

A lot of us can identify with the main character’s dislike of change! Layton not only learns a lot about geocaching, he learns about bravery, friendship, and himself.
