Live writing courses taught by an acquiring publisher are hard to come by. It may never happen again! This fall, join Chicken Scratch Books publisher and senior editor Kiri Jorgensen to learn the ins and outs of writing for tweens. She’s an expert on all things middle grade, and has a keen sense of what works for this age category. Plus, she loves to teach writers.
In this course, she’ll instruct, question, listen, and give feedback. You’ll learn, participate, share your writing, apply what you are learning, and have your eyes opened. The class is limited to 10 students maximum. Plus, you’ll earn a ‘skip the slush pile’ pass for when you are ready to submit your work. Here’s the details:
Class Dates: Monday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30 Mountain Time, for 6 weeks from October 5 – November 9. Lessons recorded if you can’t attend live, but live participation is strongly encouraged.

- Where should your story actually start?
- The Two Sides of Motive and how that works with your story plan
- Creating a connectable Voice
- The Pacing of Middle Grade
- Plotting your story using 3 Turning Point Scenes
- Connecting your protagonist’s Motive directly to the Plot
- The vitalness of Agency
- Mastering your middle grade Marketing Pitch
Lessons Include: Live Instruction, PDF Worksheets, Student Writing Review and Discussion
Prerequisites: Having a full Middle Grade story concept planned, with a first draft recommended (but not required)
Expectations: Communication for the course will be via weekly emails. The Live Course will be through Zoom meetings. The weekly emails will include the Zoom link, lesson outlines, PDF worksheets, and any other needed information. You will need access to an email account, and a computer, tablet, or phone with Zoom capacity camera and microphone.
