This Literature Circle Course is intended for group instruction. Groups ranging from 3-30+ students will benefit from this deep Language Arts based approach to analyzing great literature.

With a robust breadth of study, this group course provides a fun new way to deeply analyze—from a language arts perspective—the middle grade contemporary horse story Galloping Away by Robin Kolb. The course curriculum can span up to 6 weeks, with guided close reading, online work, and ‘paper and pencil’ assignments. Lots of videos and downloadable PDFs keep the momentum going, and student choice keeps the kids engaged. Plus, they get to meet the author!

Guided by instructors Kiri Jorgensen and Julie DenOuden, and facilitated by their group teacher, students ages 9-13 will engage through video, online work, and ‘paper and pencil’ assignments to practice a deep Language Arts based analysis of the middle grade contemporary horse story Galloping Away by Robin Kolb. This course is divided into 6 sections of study.

  • Five sections include:
    • Guided close reading where students look for clues as they read
    • Focus skill analysis based on an element of story
    • Vocabulary work where students pick their own words
    • An online comprehension quiz that can help track their understanding
  • The last section includes:
    • Focus skill culmination writing assignment that uses their previous Focus Skill work as collected data to write their essay
    • Enrichment project of their choice
    • Final Fun with the Author!

All work goes beyond standards and is geared toward student growth and choice.

14 instructional videos are part of this course, including 3 from the AUTHOR, Robin Kolb. Also included are 9 Downloadable PDF instructions and worksheets for in-person assignments.
